Cooling Mattress Toppers for Hot Sleepers

Why beds get hot, and what a topper can do about it

Your body sheds heat and moisture all night. A mattress sleeps hot when that heat has nowhere to go: dense foam that hugs you closely, a quilted pillow top packed with polyester, or a waterproof protector that seals everything in. A topper cannot refrigerate a bed, and be skeptical of anything that claims to. What a good cooling topper does is put a breathable layer between you and the heat trap so warmth moves out through the foam instead of building against your skin.

Two things make the difference: an open-cell structure, so air actually moves through the material, and a surface that does not cling. Both of our topper materials are open-cell. They differ in how much they hug you, which is why one is cooler than the other.

Gel memory foam: cooler than the memory foam you remember

Our gel memory foam toppers are poured with gel blended through an open-cell foam. The gel spreads heat sideways instead of letting it concentrate under your hips and shoulders, and the open cells let warm air escape. Compared with the dense, closed memory foam that gave the material its hot reputation, the difference is obvious on the first warm night.

Memory foam still contours closely, and close contact is what limits airflow, so a thinner topper stays cooler than a thick one. If you run warm and want memory foam, choose 2 inches or 3 inches over 4. The 3 inch Tri-Zone Topper adds a breathable bamboo cover over 1.5 inches of gel memory foam, which helps further.

Talalay latex: the cooler option

If sleeping hot is your main complaint, Talalay latex is the topper we point you to. Talalay is made by whipping natural latex into a foam, pouring it into a pin-core mold, and flash-freezing it before it is vulcanized. The process leaves a very consistent open-cell structure that breathes better than any memory foam, and the material is buoyant rather than clinging: you sleep on it more than in it, so air moves around you.

Latex also does not soften with body heat the way memory foam does, so it feels the same at 3am as it did at 10pm. Which cooling topper for which sleeper

• Warm sleeper who loves the memory foam feel: 2 or 3 inch Gel Mattress Topper, or the Tri-Zone with its bamboo cover.
• Hot sleeper who wakes up sweating: 2 or 3 inch Talalay latex, 24 ILD if you like it soft, 28 ILD for medium.
• Hot side sleeper with hip or shoulder pressure: 3 inch Talalay latex at 24 ILD, which cushions without hugging.
• Couple where one sleeps hot: a split king setup with a different topper on each side.
• RV or camper that bakes in the sun: 2 inch gel memory foam or Talalay in RV sizes, to keep the layer thin and breathable.

Whatever you choose, pair it with breathable cotton or linen sheets and skip vinyl-backed protectors, which undo the topper’s work.

What we do not do

We do not add phase-change coatings, copper dust, or cooling sprays to our foam. Those treatments wear off, they are hard to verify, and some of the sprays are exactly the chemicals CertiPUR-US certification exists to avoid.
