Where a 48 x 75 bed shows up

Three-quarter beds have been around for a century. Before the full became standard, a 48-inch-wide bed was the normal size for one adult, and thousands of antique iron and wood frames are still in bedrooms and cabins across the country. RV builders kept the size alive: it is the corner bed in many small travel trailers, the cab-over bed in a lot of truck campers, and the rear bed in older Class C motorhomes where the wall on one side and the closet on the other leave exactly 48 inches.

Because it is rare, most owners end up buying a full topper and cutting six inches off, which never comes out straight. Our 3/4 Full Short 48 x 75 is a stock size in the RV topper line, cut on the same machines as the rest, with clean square edges.

Measure carefully, three-quarter beds vary

The catch with three-quarter beds is that the name covers a spread of sizes. Antique frames run anywhere from 46 to 50 inches wide and 72 to 76 inches long. RV corner beds are usually 48 x 75 but sometimes 48 x 72 or 48 x 80, and many have a clipped corner at the foot so the bedroom door can swing.

Measure the mattress, width at head and foot and length on both sides. If it is within an inch of 48 x 75, the stock size will fit with a fitted sheet holding it square. In a truck camper cab-over, also measure the headroom to the ceiling. These beds often have 20 to 28 inches of space above the mattress, so a 2 or 3 inch topper is usually the practical limit.

Thickness for a corner bed or cab-over

• 2 inch: a decent mattress that just needs a softer, cooler surface, or a cab-over with tight headroom. This is also the pick if the bed is a lift-up storage lid.
• 3 inch: a firm or thin RV mattress and a nightly sleeper. Most three-quarter buyers choose this.
• 4 inch: a worn-out pad you are not replacing yet, and a bed with room above it.

Corner beds have one side against a wall, so the person sleeping on the inside climbs over the other to get out. A topper with a little more give, like the 3 inch, makes that easier on knees than a firm slab.
