How a split king topper works

A split king is two Twin XL mattresses, each 38 x 80 inches, pushed together on a king frame or an adjustable base to make a 76 x 80 king. The topper follows the same logic: two Twin XL toppers, one on each mattress. Together they cover the full king surface, and each half can raise, lower, and flex with its own side of the base.

To order, add two Twin XL toppers to your cart. They can be identical, or you can mix thicknesses, designs, and materials. Our split king customers commonly order a 3 inch for one side and a 2 inch or 4 inch for the other, or gel memory foam for one sleeper and Talalay latex for the partner who sleeps hot. If your split king sits on a fixed frame and you would rather hide the seam, a one-piece 76 x 80 king topper does that.

Why a split works better on an adjustable base

Adjustable bases raise the head and foot of each side independently, and a one-piece king topper fights that: when one side lifts, the topper bunches at the seam and pulls on the flat side. Two Twin XL toppers move with their own mattresses and nothing pulls on anything. Our memory foam toppers bend cleanly at any thickness; the Gel Mattress Topper 2.0 and Tri-Zone add corner straps, which keep a topper from creeping toward the foot as the head raises and lowers night after night.

Talalay latex flexes better than any foam we make. It is naturally springy, bends smoothly around the hinge points of a base without creasing, and returns flat when the base does. If you use the adjustable features every night, or your base has a zero-gravity or anti-snore preset you sleep in, latex is the material we recommend most.

Choosing each side

The point of a split king is that each sleeper gets their own answer. Some pairings we see often:

• Side sleeper and back sleeper: 3 inch gel memory foam for the side sleeper, 2 inch for the back sleeper.
• Hot sleeper and cold sleeper: 3 inch Talalay latex on the hot side, 3 inch gel memory foam on the other.
• Different weights: 4 inch for a heavier side sleeper, 3 inch for a lighter partner.
• One partner with lower back pain: Tri-Zone on that side, plain gel on the other.
• One mattress that has gone soft: Firm Mattress Topper on the tired side only.

Keep both sides the same thickness if you want a level surface across the middle; a one-inch difference is noticeable when you meet in the center, though most couples on a split king do not.

Sheets and the seam

Split king sheet sets are sold as two Twin XL fitted sheets plus one king flat sheet, and that is what you want with two toppers: each fitted sheet goes over its own mattress and topper. Pocket depth follows the usual rule, 15 inches for a 2 or 3 inch topper on a 10 to 12 inch mattress, 18 inches for a 4 inch topper. If the gap between mattresses bothers you, a split king bed bridge or a one-piece king mattress pad over both toppers closes it on fixed frames; on adjustable bases, leave the seam alone so both sides can move.
