What to look for in an RV mattress topper

The mattress that came with your RV is almost always a thin, firm foam slab built to a price. A topper is the cheapest way to make it sleep like home. The first thing to get right is size. RV beds are shorter and often narrower than residential beds, and a residential queen topper will bunch against the walls of a short queen platform. LOUNJ cuts 12 RV sizes so the topper lands flat with clean edges.

Next, think about thickness and weight. Two inches adds comfort without eating headroom in a bunk or cab-over. Three inches is the most popular choice for a short queen or RV king. Four inches is for a stock mattress that is truly hard. Finally, consider heat. RVs warm up fast, and our gel-infused open-cell foam breathes better than the closed-cell foam in most camper toppers.

Bare topper or RV Topper 2.0?

The RV Mattress Topper is bare gel memory foam in 2, 3, or 4 inches. It is the lighter, lower-cost option and works well under a fitted sheet on a bed that does not get moved around much. Choose it if you want maximum thickness or the simplest setup.

The RV Topper 2.0 adds a removable, washable cover and corner straps in 2 or 3 inches. That matters in an RV: beds get lifted for storage access, converted from dinette to sleeping, and exposed to dust and the occasional wet dog. The straps keep the topper square on the mattress and the cover keeps the foam clean. If your bed lifts on gas struts or you camp with kids or pets, the 2.0 is the better buy. Either way, if the stock mattress is beyond saving, look at the LOUNJ RV Mattress.

Questions about rv mattress toppers

What size is an RV short queen mattress topper?

A short queen, also called an RV queen or queen short, measures 60 by 75 inches, five inches shorter than a residential queen. It is the most common bed in travel trailers and fifth wheels. LOUNJ cuts the short queen topper to exactly 60×75 so it fits flat on the platform without folding at the foot.

How do I measure my RV mattress for a topper?

Strip the bedding and measure the mattress itself, width first, then length, at the widest and longest points. Do not measure the frame or platform, which can be larger than the mattress. Note any cut corners or radius edges. If your dimensions match one of our 12 RV sizes, order that; if not, request a custom size.

Which thickness is best for an RV mattress topper?

Three inches is the best all-around choice for a short queen or RV king; it transforms a firm stock mattress without adding much height. Choose 2 inches for bunks, cab-overs, and anywhere headroom is tight. Choose 4 inches only if the stock mattress is very hard and you have clearance to spare.

Will the topper fit if my RV mattress has cut corners?

Our stock RV toppers are rectangular. Many owners simply let a rectangular topper overhang slightly at a cut corner, and that works fine for a small notch. For larger cut corners or a shaped bed, order a custom topper cut to the largest rectangle that fits, since we do not cut radius corners at this time.

Can I leave the topper in the RV over winter?

Yes. Memory foam handles cold storage well, though it will feel firmer until the interior warms up. Store it flat or leave it on the bed, keep it dry, and let the RV air out before the first trip of the season. The RV Topper 2.0 cover can be removed and washed if it picks up any storage smell.

How fast will my RV topper ship?

Orders placed by 2pm Arizona time, Monday through Friday, ship the same or next business day from Phoenix with free FedEx Ground shipping to the lower 48. Most toppers arrive in 2 to 3 business days, compressed and rolled. Unroll it on the bed and allow 24 to 48 hours to fully expand before your trip.
