It is used a few weeks a year, which means it is old but not worn out, so replacing it feels wasteful. The thickness you need depends on how far gone the mattress is.

Daybeds and trundles
Daybeds are the most common guest bed that is not a bed. Most take a standard twin mattress, 38 x 75, so our stock Twin mattress topper fits. The catch is that a daybed is a sofa during the day, and a thick topper makes the seat too high and too soft to sit on comfortably. A 2 inch topper keeps the seat usable; a 3 inch topper is fine if the daybed is mostly slept on.
Trundles are thinner still. The pull-out mattress under a daybed is usually 5 to 6 inches so it clears the frame, and it is often a slightly smaller 38 x 75 or 39 x 75. A 2 inch topper adds cushion and still lets the trundle slide back under. Measure the trundle frame’s clearance before choosing 3 inches. Cover and straps, or bare foam?

Is a topper enough, or should I just replace the guest mattress?
If the mattress is firm, flat and structurally fine, a topper is the better use of money for a bed used a few weeks a year. A 2 or 3 inch gel memory foam layer makes it feel current.
