RV Mattress Sizes Chart: Short Queen, RV King, Bunk, and More

The single most common reason an RV topper gets returned is that it did not fit. That is not because people measured wrong. It is because RV manufacturers use names like “queen” and “king” for beds that are not the same size as the queen and king in your house. This chart covers the RV mattress sizes we see most often, what they are usually called, and where they show up. Print it, save it, and then go measure your bed anyway.

The sizes explained

Short queen

The short queen is the most common RV bed size by a wide margin. It is the same 60 inch width as a household queen but only 75 inches long instead of 80, which saves five inches of floor space in the bedroom or lets the slide-out close. Some manufacturers cut it at 74 inches. If your household queen sheets seem to fit but always feel loose at the foot, you probably have a short queen.

RV king and short king

An RV king is 72 by 80 inches, four inches narrower than a household king. A short king trims another five inches of length to 72 by 75. Both are common in fifth wheels and Class A coaches where the bed sits in a slide. A household king topper will not fit either one.

Three quarter

At 48 by 75 inches, the three quarter bed sits between a twin and a full. It shows up in older campers, some truck campers, and a lot of antique bed frames. We list it as “3/4 Full Short.”

Bunk

RV bunk sizes are the least standardized of all. We have seen everything from 28 by 73 up to 35 by 79, and the difference between a 28 and a 30 inch width matters when the bunk has a raised lip on the edge. Measure each bunk separately. In bunkhouse trailers it is common for the top and bottom bunk to be different sizes.

Truck sleeper

Semi cab bunks generally run between 35 by 79 and 42 by 80 inches, and every manufacturer is a little different. Our 35 by 79 bunk topper fits many of them; for the rest, a truck sleeper topper cut to your exact dimensions is a normal custom order.

How to measure your RV mattress

  • Measure the mattress, not the platform. Strip the bed and run a tape across the top surface at the widest and longest points. The plywood platform is usually a little bigger than the mattress that sits on it.
  • Check both ends. Many RV mattresses have cut corners or a notched foot so the bedroom door clears. Measure the full rectangle; a topper ordered to the full size tucks in at the corners.
  • Measure the height too. You will want to know it for sheets, and for slide-out or cabinet clearance if you are adding a thick topper.
  • Round to the nearest half inch. A topper slightly smaller than the mattress sits better than one slightly larger. If your bed reads 59 and three quarters, order 60.
