RV King Mattress Toppers, 72 x 80 Cut in the USA

An RV king mattress topper is 72 x 80 inches, four inches narrower than a home king and the same width as a California king but four inches shorter. We cut ours to exactly that size in our Phoenix factory so it fits the master bed in your fifth wheel or motorhome without a gap at the walls or an overhang at the foot.

RV king vs. home king vs. Cal king

This is the size that trips people up. A residential king is 76 x 80. A California king is 72 x 84. An RV king is 72 x 80, which shares the width of a Cal king and the length of a standard king. Buy a home king topper for an RV king bed and it is four inches too wide, so it climbs the bedroom walls on both sides. Buy a Cal king and it is four inches too long, so it stacks up against the headboard or spills off the foot.

Our RV king mattress topper is a true 72 x 80. If your coach has a 72 x 75 mattress instead, you want the short king topper. If your bed is a split king (two 36 x 80 halves on an adjustable base), order two custom 36 x 80 pieces through the custom size quote so each side can move independently.

Picking a thickness for a big RV bed

Motorhome and fifth wheel king mattresses are usually 8 to 10 inches thick, better than a trailer short queen but still built to a weight budget. The most common complaint is that the foam is too firm and sleeps hot.

  • 2 inch softens the surface and adds cooling without changing how the bed feels overall. Best if your mattress is under three years old and still supportive.
  • 3 inch is the thickness most RV king buyers land on. It takes pressure off shoulders and hips, and two people of different weights both get relief.
  • 4 inch is for a sagging or very firm mattress and for heavier sleepers. On a king this is a substantial slab of foam (around 30 lb), so be sure the bed lid struts can lift it if you have under-bed storage.

Bare foam comes in all three thicknesses. The covered RV Mattress Topper 2.0 with straps comes in 2 or 3 inch.

Check headboard and slide clearance first

Most RV king beds live in a slide-out. When the slide is retracted for travel, the bed often tucks under a cabinet or the slide ceiling with only a few inches to spare. Measure from the top of your bare mattress to the lowest point above it with the slide in. Subtract an inch for bedding and that is the thickest topper you can run without pushing the mattress into the ceiling every time you close up.

Second, measure the mattress itself, not the platform. Many 72 x 80 platforms carry a 70 x 80 or 72 x 78 mattress with a rounded corner or two. Match the topper to the mattress, and let a rounded corner overhang slightly. If your mattress is an oddball, tell us the dimensions and we will cut it to the half inch.

Third, look at how the bed is accessed. If you sit on the edge to put on shoes, a 4-inch memory foam edge will compress more than a 2-inch one. That is normal for memory foam, not a defect.

Made in Phoenix, sun-baked, and shipped compressed

We pour, cut and package our own gel memory foam in Phoenix, Arizona, and sell it factory direct. The foam is open-cell and gel-infused so it moves heat away from your body, which matters when the RV air conditioner is fighting a 100-degree afternoon. It is CertiPUR-US certified, fiberglass free, hypoallergenic, and aired out in the Arizona sun before it is rolled, which keeps the unboxing smell to a minimum.

An RV king mattress topper ships free by FedEx Ground to the lower 48 and typically arrives in 2 to 3 business days. Order by 2pm Arizona time Monday through Friday and it leaves the same or next business day. Give it 24 to 48 hours to decompress, then sleep on it for 30 nights. If it is not right, returns are free. The foam carries a 5-year warranty.

Questions about rv king mattress topper

What size is an RV king mattress topper?

An RV king mattress topper measures 72 inches wide by 80 inches long. That is four inches narrower than a standard home king (76 x 80) and four inches shorter than a California king (72 x 84). LOUNJ cuts every RV king topper to a true 72 x 80 in gel memory foam, 2, 3 or 4 inches thick.

Can I use a California king topper on an RV king bed?

It will be the right width but four inches too long. The extra length ends up bunched against the headboard or hanging off the foot of the bed, and it will creep every time you get in and out. A true 72 x 80 RV king mattress topper fits flat with no trimming.

How thick should an RV king topper be?

Three inches is the best all-around choice for a motorhome or fifth wheel king. Choose 2 inches if your mattress is still supportive and you mainly want a cooler, softer surface. Choose 4 inches for a worn or very firm mattress, after confirming you have enough clearance under cabinets and the slide-out ceiling.

Will a 4 inch topper fit under my slide-out when it is closed?

It depends on the coach. Measure from the top of your bare mattress to the lowest point above it with the slide retracted, then subtract an inch for bedding. If you have less than 4 inches of room, choose the 3 inch or 2 inch topper. Many owners run a 3 inch with no issue.

My RV king mattress has rounded corners. Will the topper fit?

Our stock RV sizes are square-cornered. A rounded corner on the mattress usually means the topper overhangs by an inch or less at that corner, which sits fine under a fitted sheet. If you would rather have matching cut corners, request a custom quote, but note we do not cut radius corners, only straight angled cuts.

How heavy is an RV king mattress topper?

Roughly 15 lb for the 2 inch, 22 lb for the 3 inch and 30 lb for the 4 inch, give or take depending on foam density. That matters if your bed lifts on gas struts for storage underneath, since the struts were sized for the original mattress alone.

Does it sleep hot in a motorhome?

Open-cell, gel-infused foam moves heat away from your body far better than the dense memory foam in most bargain toppers. It will not feel cold, but it stays neutral through the night, and pairing it with a breathable cotton sheet makes a noticeable difference in a warm RV bedroom.

What is the return policy on an RV king topper?

Every LOUNJ topper comes with a 30-Night Happiness Guarantee. Sleep on it for up to 30 nights, and if it is not working for you, contact us and we will arrange a free return with no restocking fee. The foam is also backed by a 5-year warranty.
