All Mattress ToppersWhy 3 inches is the sweet spot
Three inches of foam is enough to fully cradle a side sleeper’s shoulder and hip, which 2 inches cannot quite do for an adult of average weight. At the same time it is thin enough that your weight still reaches the mattress, so the topper adds comfort without turning a supportive bed into a soft one. That balance is why it is the thickness most sleepers between roughly 130 and 230 pounds choose, and why it is the default we suggest when someone is unsure.
It also hides a lot. A 3 inch topper evens out a mild body impression, covers a firm pillow top that has packed down, and bridges the seam between two mattresses on a split king. It will not rescue a deeply sagging mattress; for that, go to 4 inches or replace the mattress.

Matching 3 inches to your body and mattress
Side sleepers and combination sleepers get the most out of 3 inches, because the shoulder needs room to sink while the waist stays supported. Back sleepers between 150 and 230 pounds also do well here, especially on a firm innerspring. Stomach sleepers should lean toward the Firm or Tri-Zone version so the hips do not drop below the chest.
Mattress matters too. On a firm hybrid or a basic innerspring, a plush 3 inch gel topper transforms the bed. On a mattress that already feels soft, the Firm Mattress Topper or the Tri-Zone is the better 3 inch choice, and on a mattress that is sagging you may be better served by the extra depth of a 4 inch topper. If you sleep hot, choose Talalay latex or the Tri-Zone with its bamboo cover.
Fit: sheets, headboards, and adjustable bases
A 3 inch topper on a 10 to 12 inch mattress needs a fitted sheet with 15 inch or deeper pockets to stay tucked. Most standard sheets sold today reach 14 or 15 inches; if yours are older, plan on a deep-pocket set. The bed will sit 3 inches higher against the headboard, which is rarely a problem on modern frames but worth checking on an antique bed with a low rail.

Delivery, decompression, and weight
Orders placed by 2pm Arizona time Monday through Friday ship the same day by FedEx Ground, free to the lower 48, and typically arrive in 2-3 business days. The topper comes compressed and rolled; unroll it on the bare mattress and give it 24-48 hours to reach full height. It is sleepable the first night. Because we cure our foam in the Arizona sun before packing, there is very little odor.
A 3 inch gel memory foam topper is a comfortable one-person lift in twin through queen sizes; kings are easier with two. Talalay latex is denser and heavier, so plan on two people for anything larger than a twin.

Is a 3 inch mattress topper too thick?
For most adults, no. Three inches is the thickness that cushions the shoulder and hip fully while still letting the mattress support you. It feels too deep mainly for very light sleepers under about 130 pounds or for people who want only a subtle change; those sleepers are better served by 2 inches.
Is a 2 inch or 3 inch mattress topper better?
Three inches if you sleep on your side, weigh more than about 130 pounds, or your mattress is firm and you want a clear change. Two inches if you are lighter, sleep on your back or stomach, have height limits like a bunk or RV, or want the mattress feel to stay mostly the same.
Which 3 inch topper is best for back pain?
The Tri-Zone Topper, because its zoned base is firmer under the hips and lower back and softer under the shoulders, which keeps the spine straighter for side and back sleepers. Do I need deep pocket sheets for a 3 inch topper?
On a 10 to 12 inch mattress, a fitted sheet with 15 inch pockets will reach. On a thicker mattress, or with older sheets that have 12 inch pockets, buy a deep-pocket set rated for 16 to 18 inches so the corners stay put.
Will a 3 inch memory foam topper sleep hot?
Our memory foam is gel-infused and open-cell so it moves heat away better than dense conventional memory foam. Hot sleepers who still worry about it should choose the Tri-Zone with its breathable bamboo cover or a 3 inch Talalay latex topper, which is the coolest option we make.
How long does a 3 inch topper take to decompress?
Allow 24-48 hours. It will be most of the way there within a few hours of unrolling and is fine to sleep on the first night, just slightly firmer than its final feel. A warm room helps. Do not put the sheet on until it has expanded so the corners do not hold it down.
Does a 3 inch topper work on an adjustable bed?
