Hospital Bed Mattress Toppers, Cut to 36 x 80

A hospital bed mattress topper has to do something most toppers never face: bend at the head and knee every time the bed articulates, then lie flat again. LOUNJ cuts 2 inch gel memory foam and Talalay latex to the 36 x 80 home hospital bed size, or to any dimensions you send us, in our Phoenix, AZ factory.

What a hospital bed mattress is, and why it is hard to sleep on

Home hospital beds rent or sell with a basic innerspring or foam mattress, usually 36 inches wide, 80 long and about 6 inches thick. It is designed for durability, easy cleaning and a low price, not comfort. The surface is firm, the covers are vinyl or nylon that sleep hot, and after a few months the foam under the hips packs down.

For someone who spends much of the day in that bed, recovering from surgery or being cared for at home, the difference between a hard, sticky surface and a cushioned one matters every hour. A hospital bed mattress topper adds a comfort layer without replacing the mattress the equipment company supplied, and it comes off in seconds for cleaning or when the bed is returned. It is a comfort product, not medical equipment; check with the care team on anything related to positioning or skin care.

Why 2 inches works best on an adjustable hospital bed

We recommend 2 inches for almost every hospital bed, and the reason is the frame. A hospital bed raises at the head, bends at the knee, and sometimes tilts the whole deck. A thick topper resists that bend: it bunches at the hinge, lifts off the mattress at the head, and slides toward the foot when the head section is raised. Two inches of foam follows the mattress through every position and lies flat again when the bed does.

There is a second reason. Many hospital beds have side rails, and adding height to the sleep surface reduces the rail height above the mattress. A thin topper keeps that change small. Measure the rail height with the topper installed and confirm it is still appropriate for the person using the bed; if you are unsure, ask the equipment supplier. Our 2 inch mattress toppers page covers the foam in more detail, and 3 inches is available for beds that stay flat most of the time.

Gel memory foam or Talalay latex for a hospital bed

Both foams bend with an adjustable bed. They feel different, and the choice usually comes down to how the person sleeps and how much time they spend in bed.

  • Gel memory foam: contours to hips, shoulders and heels and holds still. Open-cell and gel-infused, so it runs cooler than the memory foam in older hospital pads. Best for side sleepers and anyone who finds the stock mattress too hard. CertiPUR-US certified, fiberglass free, no fire-retardant sprays, hypoallergenic and low odor.
  • Talalay latex: buoyant and quick to spring back, which makes it easier to shift position or sit up. Flexes cleanly at the hinge points, so it is our first recommendation for beds that articulate many times a day. Natural, Oeko-Tex certified, sleeps cool. Not for anyone with a latex allergy.

Both can be ordered bare or with a zippered stretch-knit cover that comes off to wash. For a bed in a care setting, the cover is worth adding, and a waterproof mattress protector over the top keeps the foam clean.

Sizing a hospital bed topper

Standard home hospital beds are 36 x 80. No big-box topper comes in that size, and a twin (38 x 75) is too wide and too short. We cut 36 x 80 as a custom piece, and we cut every other hospital bed size the same way: 35 x 80, 36 x 84 extra long, and 42 or 48 x 80 bariatric frames, in half inch increments up to 80 x 84.

Measure the mattress, not the frame. Run a tape across the top surface at the widest and longest points and round to the nearest half inch. Send width, length and thickness through our custom mattress topper form, note that it is going on a hospital bed, and we reply with a written price and lead time within 1 to 2 business days. Nothing is charged until you approve it, and there is no minimum. Need it fast? Our stock RV bunk 35 x 79 is a close fit for most 36 x 80 beds and ships same or next business day.

Questions about hospital bed mattress topper

What size mattress topper fits a hospital bed?

Most home hospital beds use a 36 x 80 inch mattress, which no standard topper size matches. We cut 36 x 80 as a custom piece, along with 35 x 80, 36 x 84 and bariatric widths of 42 and 48 inches. Measure the top of your mattress and send the numbers for a quote; if you need something fast, our 35 x 79 RV bunk size is a close stock fit.

Will a hospital bed mattress topper bend when the bed is raised?

A 2 inch topper follows the mattress through head and knee articulation and lies flat again afterward. Thicker toppers tend to bunch at the hinge and slide toward the foot when the head is raised, which is why we recommend 2 inches for beds that move often. Talalay latex flexes especially well at the hinge points.

Does a topper affect the side rails on a hospital bed?

Yes. Any topper raises the sleep surface and reduces the height of the rails above it. A 2 inch topper keeps that change small, but you should measure the rail height with the topper in place and confirm it is still appropriate for the person using the bed. When in doubt, ask the equipment supplier or care team.

Is memory foam or latex better for a hospital bed?

Gel memory foam contours and stays still, which suits side sleepers and people who find the stock mattress hard. Talalay latex springs back and makes it easier to change position or sit up, and it bends cleanly with an articulating frame. If the bed moves many times a day, latex is our usual recommendation. Avoid latex if there is a latex allergy.

Can I put a waterproof protector over the topper?

Yes, and we recommend it in a care setting. Place the topper on the mattress, then a waterproof protector, then the fitted sheet. Our optional zippered stretch-knit cover also comes off to wash. Bare foam should not be wiped with harsh cleaners; the protector keeps that from being necessary.

How long does a custom hospital bed topper take?

We reply with a written quote within 1 to 2 business days of receiving your measurements. Once you approve it, most custom pieces are cut, packaged and shipped within a week, free by FedEx Ground to the lower 48. It arrives compressed and is ready to use after 24 to 48 hours of expansion.

Is a hospital bed mattress topper medical equipment?

No. LOUNJ toppers are comfort products that add cushioning and a cooler surface to a firm hospital mattress. They are not pressure-relief or therapeutic devices and are not a substitute for equipment prescribed by a doctor or care team. If the person in the bed has specific positioning or skin-care needs, follow the care plan first.

Can I return a custom hospital bed topper?

Custom sizes are cut to the numbers you send and cannot be returned for size, so we confirm every measurement in writing before cutting. Manufacturing defects are covered by the 5-year warranty. If you order a stock size such as Twin XL or the 35 x 79 bunk, the 30-Night Happiness Guarantee applies with free returns.
