A quality air mattress has decent support. Inflate it properly and it holds you up better than most sofa beds. The problem is the surface. You are lying on a thin sheet of vinyl over a chamber of air, and air is an excellent heat sink: it draws warmth out of your back for hours, which is why people wake up cold on an air bed even in a warm room. Sizing: match the air mattress, not the bed size on the box
Air mattresses use standard names but the actual dimensions wander. A queen air bed is usually 60 x 80, a full 54 x 75 and a twin 38 x 75, which line up with our stock sizes. Some brands run an inch or two smaller, and a few oversized or SUV-shaped models are their own thing entirely.
Inflate the mattress fully and measure the flat sleeping surface, not the outside edge of the rounded bolster. A topper that is a little smaller than the air bed sits better than one that hangs over the sides. Does a memory foam topper work on an air mattress?
Yes, and it is one of the most effective upgrades you can make to an air bed. The foam insulates you from the cold air chamber, absorbs the bounce when someone else moves, and spreads your weight so a slow overnight air loss does not leave you in a dip. Put a fitted sheet over both topper and mattress to keep it in place.
What thickness air mattress topper should I get?
