Six stock bunk sizes, custom for the rest

RV Bunk Mattress Toppers in Six True Bunk Sizes

An RV bunk mattress topper turns the two-inch slab in a bunkhouse trailer into a bed a kid, a grandparent, or a tall teenager will actually sleep on. We stock six true bunk sizes, from 28 x 73 to 35 x 79, cut in our Phoenix factory, and we will cut anything else up to the half inch.

Why bunk beds are the worst mattresses in the RV

Bunk mattresses are where RV builders save weight. Most are 2 to 4 inches of low-density polyfoam on a plywood shelf, and after one season they have a permanent hollow in the middle. Kids do not complain, but adults using the bunk as a guest bed or a reading nook feel the plywood in their hips within minutes.

A 2 or 3 inch gel memory foam topper on that shelf roughly doubles the comfort layer. On a bunk the topper often ends up doing more work than the mattress under it, which is why we recommend a slightly denser choice here than on a master bed. If the original pad is truly gone, skip the topper and put a LOUNJ RV Mattress in the same bunk size on the shelf instead; the 8-inch Medium is the one to look at for a bunk.

Bunk sizes we stock, and how to measure yours

RV bunks come in more sizes than any other bed in the coach. Our six stock sizes cover the majority of bunkhouse trailers: 28 x 73, 28 x 75, 30 x 75, 30 x 80, 35 x 75 and 35 x 79. Measure the mattress, not the shelf, in two places each way; bunk pads are often cut a little under the boxed-in shelf.

Bunk beds also have the tightest vertical clearance in the RV. Measure from the top of the bare mattress to the underside of the bunk above (or the ceiling for a top bunk). A 3-inch topper on a 4-inch mattress leaves a 7-inch stack; if the bunk only has 24 inches of headroom to begin with, an adult will notice. For kids under about 10 years old, 2 inches is usually plenty.

Odd size? A 32 x 74 or 34 x 76 is a two-minute custom quote, no upcharge for being unusual, and we reply in 1 to 2 business days.

Which thickness for a bunk

  • 2 inch: children, occasional guests, or any bunk with less than 26 inches of headroom. Lightest to lift for the under-bunk storage most trailers hide there.
  • 3 inch: adults and teens, or a bunk mattress that is thin but not yet collapsed. This is the most popular bunk pick.
  • 4 inch: a full-size adult sleeping on the bunk every night, or a mattress that has bottomed out. Only if headroom allows.

Bare foam comes in all three thicknesses. The RV Mattress Topper 2.0 adds a washable cover with corner straps, which is worth having on a bunk where kids treat the bed as a trampoline or where the whole mattress gets flipped up to reach a storage bay. Note the 2.0 straps are sized for a 6 to 16 inch mattress; on a very thin bunk pad they will be loose, and bare foam plus a snug fitted sheet holds just as well.

Safe foam for the kids’ bunk

Because bunks are usually where the youngest sleepers go, the foam itself matters. Ours is CertiPUR-US certified gel memory foam, poured and cut in Phoenix, with no fiberglass and no fire-retardant sprays. It is hypoallergenic and open-cell, so it breathes better than the closed-cell pad it is sitting on, and we let it air out in the Arizona heat before compressing it so it does not fill a small bunk cubby with new-foam smell.

Bunk toppers ship free by FedEx Ground in the lower 48, arrive in 2 to 3 business days, and take 24 to 48 hours to decompress. Every size is covered by the 30-Night Happiness Guarantee with free returns and a 5-year foam warranty.

Questions about rv bunk mattress topper

What sizes do RV bunk mattress toppers come in?

LOUNJ stocks six RV bunk mattress topper sizes: 28 x 73, 28 x 75, 30 x 75, 30 x 80, 35 x 75 and 35 x 79 inches, each in 2, 3 or 4 inch gel memory foam. If your bunk is something else, such as 32 x 74 or 34 x 76, we cut custom sizes to the half inch and reply to quote requests in 1 to 2 business days.

How do I measure an RV bunk for a topper?

Pull the sheets and measure the mattress itself, width and length, in two spots each since bunk pads are not always square. Then measure the headroom from the top of the mattress to the bunk or ceiling above it. Order the topper to match the mattress and choose a thickness that leaves enough headroom to sit up.

Is a 2 inch or 3 inch bunk topper better for kids?

For children under about 10, a 2 inch topper is usually enough and keeps the most headroom. Teens and adults using the bunk will appreciate 3 inches, especially on a thin factory pad. Save the 4 inch for a bunk that an adult sleeps on nightly or a mattress that has fully collapsed.

Can I use an RV bunk mattress topper instead of replacing the mattress?

If the mattress is thin but still flat, yes, a 3 inch topper transforms it. If it has a permanent dip or is under 3 inches thick, a topper will follow that dip. In that case, a LOUNJ RV Mattress in the same bunk size, 8-inch Medium, is the better fix and carries a 10-year warranty.

Will a topper stay on a bunk mattress?

Bare memory foam grips fabric and rarely moves on a flat bunk shelf, particularly once a fitted sheet is over both layers. If the bunk mattress gets lifted often for storage, or an active kid sleeps there, the RV Mattress Topper 2.0 with a cover and corner straps keeps everything aligned.

Is the foam safe for a child's bed?

Yes. LOUNJ gel memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified, which means it is tested for low emissions and made without ozone depleters, heavy metals or certain flame retardants. There is no fiberglass and no fire-retardant spray, and we air it out before compressing so the smell is minimal by the time it arrives.

Can you make a topper for a tapered or cab-over bunk?

We cut any rectangle up to 80 x 84 in half-inch increments and can cut straight angled corners, which covers most tapered bunks and cab-over beds. We do not cut curved radius corners. Send the measurements through the custom size page and we will quote it within 1 to 2 business days.

How long does an RV bunk topper take to arrive?

Orders placed by 2pm Arizona time on a weekday ship the same or next business day. FedEx Ground delivery is free in the lower 48 and usually takes 2 to 3 business days. Unroll it on the bunk and allow 24 to 48 hours for full decompression.
