Short king, RV king, or something else?

RV manufacturers use the word king loosely. Before ordering, pull the mattress and measure it. If it is 72 wide by 75 long, you have a short king and this is your page. If it is 72 x 80, you want the RV king topper. A few coaches use 70 x 75 or 70 x 80, and those are best handled as a custom size so you do not end up with two inches of foam pressed against the wall.

Short kings are common in fifth wheels and Class A motorhomes where the bedroom slide is shallow. The five inches trimmed from the foot is what lets you walk past the bed to the closet with the slide in. A topper that runs the full 80 inches will hang into that walkway and get kicked every night, which is why cutting to 72 x 75 matters more than it sounds.

Thickness and headboard clearance on a short king

Most short king beds sit in a slide-out with a cabinet or ceiling panel close overhead when the slide is closed. Measure from the top of the bare mattress to the lowest obstruction with the slide retracted, then subtract an inch for bedding. That number is your maximum topper thickness.

• 2 inch: a surface upgrade for a mattress that is still supportive. Lightest, easiest to fit under a tight cabinet.
• 3 inch: the right call for most RV kings. Enough foam to cushion hips and shoulders through a firm factory mattress.
• 4 inch: for a thin or sagging mattress, or for couples where one partner is over 220 lb. Confirm clearance before ordering.

Measure the mattress, not the brochure

Two things to check with a tape measure. First, the mattress footprint: width at the head and foot, and length down both sides. RV mattresses are often cut slightly smaller than the platform, and a topper should match the mattress. Second, corners: many short king mattresses have one or both foot corners rounded or clipped so they clear the bedroom door or slide wall. Our stock 72 x 75 is square-cornered, and a rounded corner will simply overhang by an inch or so. If you want the corners cut to match, tell us the dimensions in a custom quote. We cut straight angled corners but not radius curves.

Also confirm the bed lid can still lift if you have under-bed storage. A 3-inch short king topper weighs around 20 lb.
