So the Cal King is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer, and the total sleeping area is slightly smaller. It exists for tall sleepers and for long, narrow bedrooms, and it is more common on the West Coast. Because the two kings are so close in size, a standard king topper on a Cal King mattress looks almost right in the box and completely wrong on the bed: it overhangs the sides by 2 inches each and stops 4 inches short of the foot.
