What actually fits a dorm bed

Almost every US college issues a Twin XL mattress: 80 inches long, and between 36 and 39 inches wide depending on the school. Most are 6 to 7 inches thick, wrapped in wipe-clean vinyl, and firm enough to bounce a quarter off of. That is why a standard Twin topper (75 inches) leaves a 5 inch gap at the foot, and why a Twin XL is the only size worth buying for a dorm.

Our Twin XL toppers measure 38 x 80 inches. On a 36 inch wide school mattress the topper sits about an inch proud on each side, which a fitted sheet holds flat without any trouble. On a 39 inch mattress it is a hair narrow, which nobody notices under a sheet. If the housing office lists an odd width, or the bed is a loft with a captured frame, we also cut custom sizes in half-inch increments.

Pick a thickness for how you sleep

Dorm mattresses are thin and firm, so the topper does more of the work than it would at home. Here is how we steer students:

  • 2 inch: a lighter change, best for back and stomach sleepers under about 150 pounds, or anyone who likes a firmer bed. Easiest to store and the lowest profile for lofted beds with a ceiling close overhead.
  • 3 inch: our most popular dorm pick. Enough gel memory foam to cushion hips and shoulders for side sleepers and take the plank feel out of a school mattress. The Gel Mattress Topper 2.0 adds a washable cover and corner straps that hold it in place on a bunk or loft.
  • 4 inch: the deepest cushion, for side sleepers over 200 pounds or a bed that is truly worn out. Check your fitted sheet pocket first; 4 inches on a 7 inch mattress needs a deep-pocket Twin XL sheet.

Cool, clean, and quiet in a shared room

Dorm rooms run warm, and a lot of them have no thermostat you control. Our memory foam is gel-infused and open-cell so heat moves out instead of pooling under you, and the foam itself is CertiPUR-US certified with no fiberglass and no fire-retardant sprays. It arrives with very little smell because it cures in the Arizona sun before it is compressed for shipping.

If you or your roommate sleep hot, or you want a topper that feels more like a springy mattress than a slow sink, ask for a Talalay latex Twin XL through our custom quote form. Talalay is naturally open-cell and buoyant, and it does not squeak or crinkle the way an inflatable pad or a cheap egg-crate does.

Shipping to campus and move-in timing

Order by 2pm Arizona time Monday through Friday and your topper ships the same day by FedEx Ground. It arrives compressed in a box that fits in a car trunk or a residence hall mailroom, and it needs 24-48 hours to fully decompress, so ideally unbox it the day you move in. Shipping is free to the lower 48, and you can send it either to the dorm mail center (use the exact address format the school gives you, including box or room number) or to your home so it rides along with everything else.

Every topper is covered by our 30-Night Happiness Guarantee. If the fit or feel is wrong once you are in the room, returns are free.

Storing it over summer

A foam topper does not need to go back in the box. In May, strip the sheet, let it air for an hour, then roll it firmly from the head end and cinch it with two straps or a ratchet strap. Slide it into a large trash bag or a mattress storage bag to keep out dust, and keep it somewhere dry and out of direct sun. Do not put anything heavy on top of a rolled topper for months; it will recover, but faster if it is not crushed. Unrolled in August, it is ready to sleep on that night.

Questions about dorm mattress topper

What size mattress topper do I need for a dorm bed?

Buy a Twin XL, 38 x 80 inches. Nearly every college mattress is 80 inches long, which is 5 inches longer than a standard Twin. Widths vary from 36 to 39 inches by school, and a 38 inch topper works on all of them once a fitted sheet is on. If your school lists something unusual, send us the measurements for a custom cut.

Is a 2 inch or 3 inch dorm mattress topper better?

For most students, 3 inches. Dorm mattresses are thin and firm, so 3 inches of gel memory foam is enough to cushion hips and shoulders without feeling like a pit. Pick 2 inches if you are a lighter back or stomach sleeper, prefer a firm bed, or have a loft with very little headroom.

Can you ship a mattress topper directly to my college?

Yes. Enter the residence hall mailing address exactly as the school formats it, including your room or mailbox number, and it ships free by FedEx Ground. Orders placed by 2pm Arizona time on a weekday leave the same day and usually arrive in 2-3 business days. Some mailrooms hold packages until move-in, so check your school's policy.

How long does the topper take to expand after unboxing?

Unroll it on the bed and give it 24-48 hours to fully decompress. It is sleepable the first night, just a little firmer than its final feel. Warm rooms speed it up. Plan to unbox on move-in day rather than the night before a big first morning.

Do I need a deep pocket sheet for a dorm mattress topper?

With a 2 or 3 inch topper on a typical 6-7 inch dorm mattress, a standard Twin XL fitted sheet usually reaches. With a 4 inch topper, or a thicker school mattress, buy a Twin XL sheet with 12 inch or deeper pockets so the corners do not pop off at night.

Will the topper slide around on a lofted or bunk bed?

Bare foam grips vinyl mattresses fairly well on its own, and the fitted sheet does the rest. If you want extra hold, the Gel Mattress Topper 2.0 has elastic corner straps and a washable cover, which is our recommendation for lofts and bunks where you cannot easily reach in to fix a shifted topper.

Does the memory foam smell when it arrives?

Very little. Our foam is CertiPUR-US certified for low emissions and we cure it in Phoenix before compressing it, so what you get is a faint new-foam scent that fades within a day of airing out. There are no fire-retardant sprays and no fiberglass in any LOUNJ topper.

How do I store a dorm mattress topper over summer break?

Let it air out, roll it tightly from one end, strap it, and slip it into a mattress bag or large trash bag. Store it somewhere dry and out of the sun, without heavy boxes stacked on it. When you unroll it in the fall it will be ready to sleep on within a few hours.
