Semi Truck Sleeper Mattress Toppers, Cut to Your Bunk

A semi truck mattress topper has to fit a bunk that no home retailer stocks: 36, 38, 39 or 42 inches wide by 79 or 80 long, sometimes with a corner clipped for the cabinet. We cut gel memory foam and Talalay latex to your exact sleeper size in our Phoenix factory, 1 to 4 inches thick, and ship it free to the lower 48.

Common sleeper bunk sizes by truck

Most OTR sleepers use one of four mattress footprints: 32 x 80 (upper bunks and some mid-roof cabs), 36 x 80, 38 or 39 x 80, and 42 x 80. Freightliner Cascadia bunks are typically 36 or 42 wide depending on the sleeper package. Kenworth W900 and W990 run 42 wide. Peterbilt 579 is usually 36, the 567 is 42. Volvo VNL 760 and 740 bunks are about 39 x 80. International LT 56-inch sleepers run 36 x 80 and their 73-inch sleepers use a 32 x 80 upper. Mack Anthem and Pinnacle are usually 36 x 80.

Those are starting points, not gospel. Sleeper packages change year to year, and plenty of drivers have swapped a mattress already. The only measurement that counts is the one you take with a tape on your own bunk. The table below lists the sizes we see most often. None of them are stock home sizes, which is why a sleeper topper is a custom cut for us; it takes 1 to 2 business days to quote and there is no charge for an odd size.

How to measure a sleeper bunk

Pull the bedding and measure the mattress, not the bunk frame. Take the width at the head and the foot and the length down both sides; sleeper mattresses are often cut a half inch or so under the frame. Note any clipped corner where the mattress meets a cabinet or the fridge, and give us the two legs of that cut (for example, 6 inches along the side and 8 inches along the foot). We cut straight angled corners; we do not cut curved radius corners.

Then measure height. From the top of the bare mattress to the underside of the upper bunk, the cabinet, or the roof. Subtract an inch for bedding and you have your maximum topper thickness. Many lower bunks have 30-plus inches and can take a 4 inch topper; upper bunks and mid-roof cabs are often under 24 inches and do better with 2 inches.

Last, check whether the bunk lifts to reach storage underneath. A 42 x 80 topper at 3 inches weighs roughly 12 lb, which is manageable, but a tight cover with straps makes the lift-and-flip easier.

Memory foam or latex for a truck bunk

A sleeper bunk is where a driver spends more nights than at home, on a mattress that is usually 4 to 7 inches of firm foam over a plywood or plastic pan. Two things fix that: pressure relief and heat control. Idling with the bunk heater or APU running, the sleeper can be warm and stuffy, and a cheap closed-cell topper turns into a hot water bottle.

Gel memory foam is the pick if your shoulders and hips ache after a 10-hour drive followed by an 8-hour sleep. It is open-cell and gel-infused, so it moves heat rather than storing it, and 3 inches over a firm OEM mattress is the most common driver request. Talalay latex (2 or 3 inch, 24 ILD soft or 28 ILD medium) is bouncier, sleeps a bit cooler, and holds its shape through years of bouncing down I-80. It is the better choice if you sleep hot or hate the slow-sink feel. Either one can be cut to your bunk with a cover or without.

Factory direct, shipped to the yard or the house

We pour, cut and package our own foam in Phoenix and sell straight to you, so there is no middleman markup and a custom 39 x 80 is quoted on the foam it takes, not on how unusual the size is. All memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified, fiberglass free and hypoallergenic, made without fire-retardant sprays and aired out in the Arizona sun so it does not stink up a closed cab. Latex is natural Talalay, Oeko-Tex certified.

Toppers ship compressed by FedEx Ground, free in the lower 48. We can ship to your home, your terminal, or a FedEx pickup location on your route. Let it decompress 24 to 48 hours before judging it. Every topper has a 30-Night Happiness Guarantee with free returns and a 5-year warranty. Questions about a fit? Call (800) 556-1333 and talk to someone who has cut a few hundred of these.

Questions about truck sleeper mattress topper

What size mattress topper fits a semi truck sleeper?

Most sleeper bunks are 32, 36, 38, 39 or 42 inches wide and 79 to 80 inches long, depending on the truck and sleeper package. Freightliner Cascadia is commonly 36 or 42 x 80, Volvo VNL about 39 x 80, Kenworth W900 42 x 80. Measure your mattress and we will cut a semi truck mattress topper to that exact size.

Do you stock a 42 x 80 or 36 x 80 topper?

Not as a shelf item, since no residential size matches a sleeper bunk. We cut them to order in our Phoenix factory from the same foam as our RV toppers. Request a quote with your size and thickness and you will hear back in 1 to 2 business days. Our stock 35 x 79 bunk size is close enough for some older cabs.

How thick should a truck sleeper mattress topper be?

Three inches of gel memory foam is the most common driver choice over a firm 4 to 7 inch OEM bunk mattress. Go 2 inches if headroom is tight (upper bunks, mid-roof cabs) or you only want a cooler surface. Four inches suits a lower bunk with plenty of clearance and a mattress that has gone flat.

Memory foam or latex for a truck bunk?

Gel memory foam gives the most pressure relief for shoulders and hips after a long drive and is the more popular pick. Talalay latex sleeps cooler, responds faster when you roll, and is very durable under constant road vibration. If you run hot in the sleeper or dislike a slow-sink feel, choose latex.

Can you cut the corner to clear my cabinet?

Yes. Give us the two measurements of the clipped corner, for example 6 inches along the side and 8 inches across the foot, and we will cut a straight angled corner to match. We do not cut curved radius corners.

Will the topper slide around on the bunk while driving?

Bare memory foam grips a fabric mattress cover well and rarely shifts on a flat bunk, especially under a fitted sheet. If you lift the bunk for storage often, ask for the optional cover on your custom quote; the cover keeps the foam clean and makes it easier to handle.

Can you ship it to a terminal or a FedEx pickup point?

Yes. The topper ships compressed in a box by FedEx Ground, free in the lower 48, so it can go to your home, your company terminal, or a FedEx Office or Walgreens hold location along your route. Most orders arrive in 2 to 3 business days after the custom cut is finished.

Is there a trial period on a custom-cut sleeper topper?

Yes. Custom sizes carry the same 30-Night Happiness Guarantee as stock toppers: sleep on it up to 30 nights and if it is not right, contact us for a free return. The foam is also covered by our 5-year warranty.
