If you have shopped for a mattress or a memory foam topper, you have seen the CertiPUR-US seal. It is on our products, and it is on a lot of others. But most shoppers cannot say what it actually certifies, and a few brands are happy to let the seal imply more than it means. As a factory that pours its own foam and goes through the testing, we can explain it plainly.
The short version
CertiPUR-US is a voluntary certification program for flexible polyurethane foam, the kind used in mattresses, toppers, pillows, and upholstered furniture. Certified foam has been tested by independent laboratories and shown to be made without a specific list of harmful chemicals and to have low emissions. It is run by the Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam, a nonprofit, and the foam is retested regularly to keep the certification.
What certified foam must be made without
To carry the seal, foam is analyzed and must meet all of the following criteria:
- No ozone depleters. No chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or other ozone-depleting substances used in production.
- No PBDEs, TDCPP, or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants. These are the flame retardant chemicals that have raised the most health concerns in foam products.
- No mercury, lead, or other heavy metals. Lead content must meet toy safety standards.
- No formaldehyde. Tested to a detection limit of 0.1 parts per million.
- No phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. These are plasticizers restricted in children’s products.
- Low VOC emissions for indoor air quality. Volatile organic compound emissions below 0.5 parts per million.
Foam is also screened for chemicals classified as carcinogens, mutagens, or reproductive toxins under the Globally Harmonized System.
How the testing works
A foam producer submits samples to an independent, accredited testing lab. In the first year, the foam is tested twice; after that, it is recertified every year. The program also does random testing and on-site visits to the plants that make certified foam. The list of certified foam producers and the companies licensed to use the seal is published on the CertiPUR-US website, which brings us to the part shoppers should care about most.
How to check if a claim is real
Because the seal carries weight, some sellers use it loosely. You can verify a claim yourself: the CertiPUR-US website maintains a searchable list of participating companies. If a brand says its foam is certified, its name or its foam supplier’s name should appear there. A seller that cannot tell you who poured their foam is a seller to be cautious with.

What CertiPUR-US does not cover
This is the part that gets glossed over. Being clear about it is more useful than pretending the seal means everything.
- It certifies the foam, not the finished product. The cover fabric, any fire barrier, adhesives, and other layers are outside the program. A mattress with certified foam can still contain a fiberglass fire sock or a chemical flame retardant spray on the cover.
- It is not an “organic” or “natural” label. Polyurethane foam is a petroleum-based product. Certified foam is cleaner, not plant-based.
- It does not certify latex. Talalay latex is a different material with its own certifications, such as Oeko-Tex and GOLS. Our Talalay latex is Oeko-Tex certified.
- It is not a durability or comfort rating. Certified foam can still be low density and wear out quickly. Density and quality are separate questions.
- It does not mean zero odor. Low VOC foam can still have a faint new-foam scent that fades in a day or two.
Why it still matters
Even with those limits, the certification is the most meaningful independent check available on foam chemistry, and the chemicals it excludes are the ones health researchers have been most concerned about in bedding. Sleeping with your face a few inches from a slab of foam for eight hours a night, every night, is a good reason to want that foam tested by someone other than the company selling it.
How LOUNJ goes beyond the seal
Because the seal only covers the foam, we made choices about everything else too:
- Fiberglass free. None of our toppers, pillows, or mattresses use a fiberglass fire barrier.
- No fire-retardant sprays. We do not spray chemical flame retardants on our foam or covers.
- Water-based foam processes. Lower VOCs and less off-gassing.
- Sun-baked in Arizona. Our foam is cured and aired in the Phoenix heat, which is why customers notice so little odor out of the box.
- Hypoallergenic. Resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew.
- Both foams certified. In layered products like our Tri-Zone Topper, the memory foam layer and the high-density base foam are both CertiPUR-US certified.
Questions we hear
Is CertiPUR-US foam safe for kids and pets?
The heavy metal limits are set to toy safety standards and the phthalate restrictions come from children’s product rules, so it is one of the better assurances available for a child’s bed or a pet bed. Our shredded foam fill, which many customers use for dog beds, is the same certified foam.
Does certified foam still off-gas?
A little, at first. The 0.5 ppm VOC limit is low, and the scent people notice on unboxing is usually gone within 24 to 48 hours, especially if the room is ventilated.
Is memory foam CertiPUR-US certified automatically?
No. Memory foam is a type of polyurethane foam, and it only carries the seal if the producer submits it for testing and passes.
